Gaming Corner: Unepic Game Review

Welcome to another installment of Gaming Corner! Today I'll be looking at the indie game known as Unepic!

Name: Unepic
Platform: PC
Genre: RPG
Developer: Francisco Téllez de Meneses

First Impressions: Taking a page fom Castlevania's book, this looks to be a slightly more complex version of the aforementioned game. It looks like a mix of a classic and modern RPG, which isn't necessarily a bad thing to do.

Gameplay: The gameplay for Unepic works similarly to that of a modern RPG or an MMO. You level up a certain amount of times to attempt to achieve maximum level and each time you level, you're granted around 5-6 points to distribute to increase weapon damage and your professions with potions, elixirs, etc. You move from left to right and jump using the up arrow. You attack with your weapon and can keybind multiple keys to switch weapons or use different abilities such as potions.

Graphics: The graphics are all designed by Francisco himself. The entire game looks like it's a nod to his variation of the medevil times (or Castlevania). There are moments where it seems too plain or dark to see anything on screen and it doesn't give a spooky feeling of being within a large castle filled with enemies.

Story: The story follows a young man named Daniel in modern time playing Dungeons and Dragons with his friends. When he goes to the bathroom, the electricity goes out and he wakes up in a castle. Looking around and assuming it was just a hallucination, Daniel sets out to find a way to get out of the castle and wake up. But there's more than that than meets the eye!

--- Rating System ---
On a scale of 1 to 5, I'll rate each individual aspect of the game here.

Gameplay: 4/5 - This is perhaps the most important aspect of the RPG genre. Well, most genres. The RPG system here seems well thoughtout with stats, leveling up to make yourself stronger, and giving you outfits that boost your abilities differently. I do wish armor pieces were done though, as it seems better than having to switch full outfits for buffs.

Graphics: 4/5 - Graphically, this game looks amazing for only one guy working on it officially (not through translation though). It does definitely remind me of Castlevania in some instances

Story: 3/5 - The game adds humor throughout the story, though it's hit and miss at times. The story otherwise is typical of the RPG genre. Daniel tries to find a means to escape only to realize a greater evil has to be stopped.

Overall Rating:  3.6/5 - I'd recommend this game to those that enjoy RPGs with humor and exploration, along with bettering their character.
